How are financial departments being transformed thanks to Business Intelligence (BI)?

In the energy sector, speed of decision can makethe difference between a profitable project and a multi-million budget overrun. However, many finance teams remain trapped in manual processes that slow them down.

The story of Genser Energy is a perfect example of how targeted training can radically transform the way a company manages its strategic investments and its Finance department.

The starting point: growth held back by manual processes

Genser Energy is experiencing a rapid expansion of its energy infrastructure in Ghana. Thermal power plants, solar projects, mining contracts: each new project generates a significant flow of financial data. The challenge? This data was still scattered across SAP, Excel, and static dashboards.

The daily life of the Finance team included long periods of manually consolidating data to produce fixed reports. Budget variances were detected late and the team was totally dependent on IT teams for any reporting changes. In a sector where operating costs are constantly fluctuating and where every investment decision involves considerable resources, this lack of responsiveness could be seen as a disadvantage.

The challenge was threefold: automate the production of reports to free up analysis time, create real-time visibility on financial performance, and make the Finance team autonomous, without external dependence.

The solution: immersive and operational training

Rather than a technical deployment imposed by the IT department, Genser Energy made a bold choice: invest in the skills of its team.

The objective? Transform Excel users into autonomous creators of Power BI dashboards.

Our approach in 3 days was gradually structured.

The first day was devoted to mastering the fundamentals: importing and cleaning data from their real sources (SAP, Excel), modeling financial data with relationships between projects, costs and revenues, then creating the first DAX measures adapted to their business KPIs.

On the second day we built impactful visualizations with interactive dashboards, set up their key indicators (margins per site, budget differences) and worked on visual storytelling techniques to facilitate decision-making.

The third day was dedicated to automation and sustainability: setting up automatic updates, good data governance practices, and creating a comprehensive dashboard ready to deploy.

The secret to efficiency? From day one, we worked on their real data, their concrete projects, their daily problems.

No abstract theory: each exercise directly prepared the dashboards that they would use the following Monday.

The results: a measurable transformation from the first weeks

At the end of the training, the team was able to automatically connect Power BI to their data sources, model complex financial flows, create dynamic visualizations adapted to each audience, and update their reports in one click, without manual manipulation.

From the first week, the benefits were felt. The team identified financial anomalies that were invisible in the old Excel reports. Cost overruns on some mining contracts were detected and corrected before they significantly impacted profitability. Monthly reports, which previously required several days of manual consolidation, are now generated automatically. The result: valuable hours recovered for strategic analysis rather than data production. No more copy and paste, no more broken Excel formulas, no more consolidation errors. Data is centralized, reliable and updated in real time.

Beyond individual efficiency gains, Power BI has broken organizational silos. Dashboards are now shared between Finance and Operations teams, creating a common language and aligned goals. The margin monitoring dashboard now allows operational staff to immediately understand the financial impact of their technical decisions, while Finance directly visualizes the operational consequences of their analyses.

What if it was your team?

There is nothing exceptional about the Genser Energy story. It simply illustrates what happens when a company decides to invest in the skills of its teams rather than undergoing processes.

Do you recognize your organization in these situations ? Your teams spend more time producing reports than analyzing them, your strategic decisions are slowed down by consolidation deadlines, your data is scattered between several incompatible tools, you depend on external experts for each evolution of your reporting, and you detect budget differences too late to act effectively.

If so, know that transformation is possible and faster than you think. Genser Energy reached the milestone in 3 days. Their Finance team went from constrained Excel users to autonomous creators of analytical solutions. Their decisions are faster, more accurate, and better shared.

The question is no longer “is it possible?” but “what are you waiting for to transform your data into a competitive advantage?”
